Senegal - World Cup 2018

You are here

Like Nigeria, Senegal is another sneaky good African team that has a chance to do something memorable in the Russia 2018 World Cup Odds.

They have a balanced squad from top to bottom and played convincingly well during qualifying, winning a difficult group D.

This is their first appearance in a World Cup since 2002 when they pulled a fantastic upset against France in the group stage and had a surprise run into the quarterfinals.

They are one of only three African nations to have made it that far in the World Cup. This year, if Senegal can manage some points against teams in an evenly-matched group, they may repeat the success of the 2002 squad.

Senegal’s World Cup History

Senegal's soccer program started the same year the country gained its independence in 1960. By 1962 they achieved affiliation with FIFA, and by 1965 had placed Fourth in their first Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

While they would not reach the World Cup stage until 2002, they were quite successful in their region, appearing in 12 of the last 17 Africa Cup of Nations Tournaments and finishing as runners-up in 2002.

It took another ten years or so for the team to achieve anything of note, but after a quarterfinals appearance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and a successful 2018 World Cup qualifying run, it seems that Senegal is ready to prove what it's made of.

Senegal’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

Undefeated in qualifying, Senegal disposed of a relatively difficult group that included South Africa, Cape Verde, and Burkina Faso.

Going 4-2-0, they spread the scoring out among 8 different players, with only Cheikh N'Doye and Diafra Sako netting more than one (each scored two).

Since having qualified, Senegal has played two friendly matches that ended in draws against Uzbekistan and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dating back to March of 2017, Senegal has only lost two matches, making for a 7-9-2 record in that time.

How Does The Senegal World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

Senegal's squad will most likely feature Napoli center-back Kalidou Koulibaly in midfield along with the duo of Idrissa Gueye and captain Cheikhou Kouyate.

Up front, Liverpool's Sadio Mane, who is the star of this team, will be helped out by Moussa Sow and Stoke City's Mame Diouf. The front of the pack also features Monaco's Keita Balde and Milan's M’Baye Niang, who are scoring threats.

Senegal Odds To Win World Cup 2018

Senegal's group is a very even one; they could conceivably compete with Colombia for the third spot and given a little luck, even give Poland a run for the 1st seed.

They are still underdogs to those countries, however, and are only slight favorites over Japan (6/4 odds-on favorites for their head to head match), so making it out of the group stage will not be easy. Other teams will have to keep an eye out for the Senegalese though because overlooking them might turn into a nightmare.
