South Korea - World Cup 2018

You are here

As one of the weaker teams coming into the Russia 2018 World Cup, South Korea has a near-impossible task ahead of them in even winning a single game.

They are up against three superior teams in the group stage with Germany holding the #1 spot in FIFA rankings while Mexico is #17 and Sweden is #19. South Korea sits at spot #59 with only Russia and Saudi Arabia below in the rankings.

South Korea’s World Cup History

Despite its struggles, South Korea does have a decent World Cup record for a small country in an underdeveloped soccer region.

They have qualified for every World Cup tournament since 1990, and are one of only six teams to accomplish such a feat.

They had a magical run in 2002, when they co-hosted the tournament with Japan, making it all the way to the semi-finals and finishing in fourth place.

They are the most successful team from their region, having participated in more World Cups than any other AFC country with 10. While they only have two AFC cups to their name, they have been finalists on four occasions and finished in third place four other times in that tournament.

Their all-time win/loss record in the World Cup is 5-9-17, putting them in 26th place among all countries, ahead of teams like Colombia, Croatia, Nigeria, and Peru.

How Does The South Korea World Cup Squad Stack Up?

This year's team only has two standouts, Swansea's Ki Sung-Yeung and Tottenham's Heung-min Son.

Son is second on Tottenham in scoring behind Harry Kane and also led South Korea in scoring during AFC Qualification. Ki is South Korea's Captain and has been a regular starter at Swansea since 2012.

Apart from these two players, most of their teammates play in the National league or are youngsters trying to make their name in Europe. One of those is Kwon Chang-hoon, a 23-year-old Midfielder for Dijon. This season he has made 28 appearances for his club team, scoring 8 goals.

South Korea Odds To Win World Cup 2018

It is highly unlikely that South Korea will even so much as win a game. At best, they are listed as 5/2 odds-against underdogs to Sweden, so there's not much chance even in this scenario.

They will need a tremendous amount of luck and determination to pull off any upsets.
