The top German soccer league is the Bundesliga which has 18 teams competing for the title. The season begins in August each year and runs through May of the next calendar year. Most of the games during the season are played on the weekend. The league was founded in 1962 and since that time a total of 51 teams have competed. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the title and the top three finishers get a spot in the Champions League while the fourth place team goes into a playoff qualifying for the Champions League. The 2012-2013 season had the following teams, FC Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt, Fortuna Dusseldorf, SC Freiburg, SPVgg Greuther Furth, Hamburger SV, Hannover 96, 1899 Hoffenheim, FSV Mainz 05, FC Nuremberg, FC Schalke 04, VfB Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg.
