The English EFL Championship is the second division of the English football league system. Officially known as the English Football League Championship, the EFL Championship for short, or the Sky Championship, thanks to the sponsorship of Sky Sports, it was founded in 1892 as the first top-flight national English football league under the umbrella of The Football Association. After the radical restructuring that ended with the creation of the independent English Premier League to replace the Football League First Division as the top league in the country, the arrangement included the displacement of the EPL Championship to the second tier of the English Football System in which English Premier League took the top-flight tier, the previous Football League under the English FA was divided in three tiers: The English EFL Championship as the Second Division, the EF League One, as the Third Division, and the EF League Two, as the Fourth Division.

English EFL Championship members also participate in other national events, like the Football Association Cup or FA Cup and the English Football League Cup or EFL Cup, also known as the Carabao Cup, through which they have potential access to continental competitions, like the UEFA Champions League in case of winning the FA Cup, or the UEFA Conference League in case of winning the EFL Cup.

What is the English EFL Championship?

The English EFL Championship became the country's second-tier league after the top clubs broke away from the FA and launched the English Premier League in 1992, in an effort to tackle the problems that were crippling English Football in the 1980s and increasing their control over sponsorships and television rights, boosting their income. Subsequently, links with the FA-managed Football League System were maintained, with the English EFL Championship adopting the role of the second tier in the English Football Pyramid.

The English EFL Championship is the richest secondary league in the world, the ninth-richest in Europe, and the eleventh in world Club football, with more resources and higher attendance than world-renowned leagues like the Turkish Super Lig, the Austrian Bundesliga, the Argentina Primera Division, and the American MLS, to name a few.

Current teams:

  • Birmingham City - Birmingham
  • Blackburn Rovers - Blackburn
  • Bristol City - Bristol
  • Cardiff City - Cardiff
  • Coventry City - Coventry
  • Huddersfield Town - Huddersfield
  • Hull City - Kingston upon Hull
  • Ipswich Town - Ipswich
  • Leeds United - Leeds
  • Leicester City - Leicester
  • Middlesbrough - Middlesbrough
  • Millwall - London
  • Norwich City - Norwich
  • Plymouth Argyle - Plymouth
  • Preston North End - Preston
  • Queens Park Rangers - London
  • Rotherham United - Rotherham
  • Sheffield Wednesday - Sheffield
  • Southampton - Southampton
  • Stoke City - Stoke-on-Trent
  • Sunderland - Sunderland
  • Swansea City - Swansea
  • Watford - Watford
  • West Bromwich Albion - West Bromwich

The English EFL Championship has 24 participating clubs each season, which is played between August and May, with a double round-robin format in which each club plays against each other twice, at home and away, for a total of 46 matches each, with the usual three points per win, one point per draw, and no points per loss. All teams are ranked by points, and in case of a tie in points, by goal difference, by goals scored, head-to-head score between tied teams, and goals scored away in the matchup. If a tie that would define the Championship or the qualification to other competitions persists, a playoff match played at a neutral venue would decide the tie-break.

The English EFL Championship includes a relegation and promotion system, in which three teams, the top two teams, plus the winner of a playoff contested by the third to sixth-ranked teams¸ in a two-legged knock-out where the third seed is matched with the sixth and the fourth with the sixth. The winners of these semifinals meet in a one-game final played at Wembley Stadium. Conversely, the bottom three teams in the table are relegated to EFL League One, replaced with the top three teams from this third-tier competition. This relegation system gives the English EFL Championship an outstanding level of competitiveness, with very high stakes both at the top and the bottom of the table.

How to Bet on the English EFL Championship

BetPhoenix.ag not only offers you the best English EFL Championship Odds, but we also provide you with many helpful tools, like this English EFL Championship odds guide, to introduce you to the numerous moneymaking opportunities available when betting on the English EFL Championship betting lines, helping you improve your chances of winning.

English EFL Championship Point Spread

The English EFL Championship Point Spreads bets, similarly to other major sports like football, basketball, and baseball, are based on a handicapped margin of victory established on a projected game result. If a English EFL Championship betting lines show a point spread of 1.5 for an upcoming game, the favorite team (-1.5) must win by at least two goals for your bet to be a winner, while betting on the underdog (+1.5) can lose by one goal, tie the game or win outright for your bet to be a win. The .5 fraction is used to avoid a push in the wagers.

This is an example of a English EFL Championship Point Spread, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Points Spread Odds

Leicester City -1.5

Ipswich Town +1.5

In this case, the -1.5 points spread indicates that Leicester City is the favorite to win by a margin of two goals against Ipswich Town. Conversely, Ipswich Town is the underdog and can lose by a margin of less than two goals. These are the likely results of this bet:

· Leicester City wins by two or more goals: Leicester City bettors win.

· Leicester City wins by one goal: Ipswich Town bettors win.

· The game is a draw/tie: Ipswich Town bettors win.

· Ipswich Town wins the game: Ipswich Town bettors win.

English EFL Championship Moneyline

English EFL Championship Moneyline is always the most straightforward betting option. Your pick reflects who you expect to be the outright winner of the game. A negative odds value indicates the favorite, while a positive value indicates an underdog. English EFL Championship Moneyline uses a $100 base American odds system, in which larger numbers indicate a stronger favorite or weaker underdog.

The two-way English EFL Championship Moneyline, in which the English EFL Championship betting lines are focused on either one of the two sides winning, removing the impact of a tie or draw, in which case the bet would be a push. There is also a three-way English EFL Championship Moneyline, in which the English EFL Championship betting lines offer odds values for the home team winning, the visitor team winning, or the match ending in a draw or tie.

This is an example of a Two-Way English EFL Championship Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Leicester City -350

Ipswich Town +240

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Leicester City -350, as favorites, you would need to risk $350, while betting $100 on Ipswich Town +240 as an underdog, you would receive $240 if Ipswich Town wins the game. If the match ends in a tie, the wager would be a push, which means the bet is voided and refunded.

This is an example of a Three-Way English EFL Championship Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Leicester City -220

Draw +240

Ipswich Town +140

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Leicester City -220 as favorites, you would need to risk $220. Betting $100 on the draw +240, you would receive $240 if the game ends in a tie. And betting $100 on Ipswich Town +140 as an underdog, you would receive $140 if Ipswich Town wins the game.

At BetPhoenix, our English EFL Championship odds will give you the best available Moneyline prices and the tightest point spread odds offered by any sportsbooks.

English EFL Championship Over/Under Totals

The English EFL Championship Totals bet is based on a projected final score that includes both teams, independently on which side wins. English EFL Championship Totals are represented in an Over/Under set, where you can pick if you expect this result to be over or under this estimated line.

This is an example of a English EFL Championship Over/Under Totals as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

English EFL Championship Totals – Leicester City vs. Ipswich Town

Total: 2.5

Over odds: -140

Under odds: +150

In this case, the English EFL Championship Over/Under of 2.5 means that if the match ends with a combined score of three or more goals, the Over wins; if the total score is two or less, the Under wins. If you bet to win $100 on the Over -140, you would need to risk $140 and win if the game ends with 3 goals or more. Betting $100 on the Under +150, you would receive $150 if the game ends with 2 goals or less.

English EFL Championship Parlays

English EFL Championship Parlay is a wager type in which two or more English EFL Championship betting lines are combined to form a single wager with a considerably higher payout. However, all selected English EFL Championship betting lines must win for the parlay wager to win. You can combine point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, and other wagers. You can also combine favorites and underdogs. The more bets you add to your English EFL Championship parlay, the odds multiply accordingly in your favor.

Using the example, a two-line English EFL Championship Parlay could be as follows:

Leicester City -220

Leicester City vs. Ipswich Town Total: Under 2.5 +150

By combining the Leicester City Moneyline -150 and Total Under 2.5 +150 for the Leicester City vs. Ipswich Town game on a 2-team parlay risking $100, the combined odds would be +264 with a payout for this parlay of $363.62, about 3.5 times your bet, instead of risking $100 to bet on each separately.

English EFL Championship Prop Bets

English EFL Championship prop bets are one of the most exciting ways to bet on the outcome of the games. The most popular English EFL Championship Prop Bets include many possibilities. Team prop bets include lines to bet on which team will score first, how many shots on goal will be made, how many corner kicks will occur, how many cards will be sanctioned, and a long etcetera. Player props bets include who will score a goal during the game, who will score the first goal of the match, who will score multiple goals, how many shots on goal a player will make, etc.
