Rafael Nadal is the top seed and the defending champion. He will be the likely favorite although he has looked beatable in recent weeks. In fact, there is a chance Nadal could lose his number one ranking in this tournament. The two players most likely to beat him are world #2 Novak Djokovic and world #3 Stanislas Wawrinka. Since this event is played in Spain the focus will be on the Spanish players. In addition to Nadal, other Spanish players who could do well include Nicolas Almagro, Pablo Andujar, Tommy Robredo, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez.

The Mutua Madrid Open has been held in Madrid since 2002. It has been a dual event with the men and the women competing since 2009. It is a major prep on clay for the upcoming French Open. The Mutua Madrid Open is also a Masters 1000 event which places it right behind a Grand Slam event in terms of importance. Nadal beat Wawrinka in last year’s final. Two years ago it was Federer beating Berdych while Djokovic beat Nadal three years ago.

Tennis Predictions

This is a big week for Nadal who could lose his number one ranking. If Nadal loses before the quarterfinals and Djokovic wins the title then it would be Djokovic taking over the top spot. I don’t think that will happen as I like Nadal to win the title.
