United States Soccer Team Preview and Odds to Win Group G

United States Football Soccer Team

The United States plays in tough Group G in the 2014 World Cup along with powerhouse Germany, Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Ghana, who beat them four years ago. The hopes are high for the United States to reach the knockout round but it will not be easy in one of the most difficult groups at the 2014 World Cup.

Let’s look at the USA team and Group G World Cup odds at BetPhoenix Sportsbook.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has already said that he expects his team to at least reach the final 16. That would mean beating out either Portugal or Ghana since very few people believe Germany is beatable.

If the United States is going to advance they need their top players to produce. Clint Dempsey scored 8 goals in qualifying and he is off to a fast start with the Seattle Sounders in the MLS. The team will need Michael Bradley to make plays and set up players like Dempsey and Landon Donovan. And it almost goes without saying that they need goalkeeper Tim Howard to play extremely well if they are to advance.

The United States had little difficulty in qualifying with their only loss coming 2-1 to Honduras. The USA will be playing in their 10th World Cup. Their best finish came in 1930 when they finished third. They made the quarterfinals in 2002.

Schedule

16 June 2014

Ghana vs. United States, Arena das Dunas, Natal

22 June 2014

United States vs. Portugal, Arena Amazonia, Manaus

26 June 2014

United States vs. Germany, Arena Pernambuco, Recife

World Cup Picks

The United States is capable of getting to the round of 16 but to do so they simply have to win their first game against Ghana or at least get a draw. I think they can beat Portugal so the opener against Ghana will likely decide whether or not they advance because winning against Germany is not likely.
