Oscar Odds: 'Oppenheimer' Dominates With 13 Nominations

Oscar Odds 2024 - Bet on the Oscars at BetPhoenix

Oscar 2024: 'Oppenheimer' Dominates With 13 Nominations, 'Poor Things' Follows With 11.

Oppenheimer, the cinematic examination of the dawn of the Atomic Age, started the race for the 96th Academy Awards, earning 13 nominations. It is closely followed by Poor Things, a feminist fiction set in a steampunk world of mutants and chauvinism, with 11 nominations. Killers of the Flower Moon, a dramatic depiction of a conspiracy to rob the Osage Nation of its oil wealth, came up third with 10 nominations.

Both Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon come drawn from bitter chapters of American history, gaining recognition at a moment of division and political unrest in the United States, adding resonance to dark subject matters.

Barbie, despite topping last year's box office, trailed with 8 nominations in a controversial move that left director Greta Gerwig and star and producer Margot Robbie out of the run for a statue. Sharing the release date with Oppenheimer, these twin blockbusters became an instant phenomenon, driving crowds back to theaters for double features, making the Barbenheimer meme a viral trend. These two movies earned over $2 billion globally, a vast showing that boosted movie theaters still struggling from the pandemic.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Killers of the Flower Moon scored Best Picture nominations. They were joined by Poor Things, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest. For the first time, three best picture contenders — Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, and Past Lives — were directed by women.

The Best Actor nominees feature Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.

Best actress nominees are Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone for Poor Things, Annette Bening for Nyad, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro.
