Chicago Cubs Analysis

The Cubs missed out on an opportunity to increase their lead over the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend when they played the Washington Nationals.

After the first game of the series against Washington, Nationals manager Dusty Baker announced that Matt Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez would miss their scheduled starts over the weekend, which should gave the Cubs a better chance of winning the series.

However, Chicago took a nosedive losing to the Nationals and saw their division lead trimmed to 0.5 games over the Brewers.

Against the Giants, the Cubs should be able to able to increase their division lead but need to play better than they did last week when they lost four of the six games they played.

The Cubbies have been ailing from woes in their bullpen, that have been at the root of their struggles as of late.

An eighth inning grand slam by Matt Wieters on Sunday was the nail in the coffin in the 9-4 loss.

Chicago produced ten hits and walked four times with Kyle Schwarber going deep while Wilson Contreras smacked two solo bombs.

Willson Contreras has upped his game once more for Chicago. He’s batting .455 in six August games while collecting 26 total bases.

No other Cub has over 14 total bases in August, but Javier Baez and Ben Zobrist are each hitting .333 or better this month.

The fact they play their next six games on the road means they can’t afford too many mistakes because if they lose their division lead, they might not make the playoffs since the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks currently hold the two Wildcard spots and have a five game lead over the Brewers.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Jake Arrieta will get the start for the Cubs on Monday. In 22 starts, the former Cy Young winner has a 10-8 record with a 3.88 ERA. Arrieta had a slow start to the season but has been gradually turning things around.

Unfortunately for him, despite not allowing more than two runs in his last four starts, the team is only 2-2 in that stretch because he hasn’t been getting a lot of run support.

Chicago’s bats were only able to bat in three hits in the 3-0 loss against Arizona, Arrieta’s last start. The question is, can the Cubs’ bats give a little helping nudge for Arrieta?

Cubs Betting Trends

  • Chi Cubs is 15-7 SU in its last 22 games
  • Chi Cubs is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games
  • Chi Cubs is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games on the road

San Francisco Giants Analysis

The Giants have accepted that this season is lost, and are now playing out their remaining games with an eye on the future.

Even though they will finish at the bottom of the NL West, San Francisco has been surprisingly competitive lately and coming off a series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

For most of the season, their defense has been their biggest problem so expect the team to address their defensive woes during the offseason.

The Giants will also have to evaluate their pitching staff and make some much needed changes because some of their recent acquisitions haven’t worked out as hoped.

With no chance at the postseason, can the Giants rain on their opponents’ parade down the stretch in the NL?

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Giants will give Matt Moore the start against Chicago. In 22 starts, Moore has a 3-11 record with a 5.88 ERA.

He has also allowed 11 runs in his last three games and hasn’t won a start since June. Moore’s struggles this year is likely going to force the Giants to make a tough decision about his future with the team at the end of the season. But if he can finish strong, he might still have a roster spot next season.

Giants Betting Trends

  • San Francisco is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games
  • San Francisco is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of San Francisco's last 7 games

Pick and Predictions

Both teams are struggling right now, but the Cubs are the better team and are facing a pitcher that doesn’t have a lot of confidence in himself right now. Cubs win an easy game.
