Boston Team Analysis

After a slow start to the season, the Red Sox have been on a tear lately, winning five games in a row and seven of their last eight games.

Their recent run and a slump by the New York Yankees have allowed the Red Sox to take the AL East lead as well as a 2.5 game lead over the Yankees.

A lot of the Red Sox recent success can be attributed to their pitching rotation, which has been stingy with runs in recent weeks.

In Monday’s opener, the Sox coughed up a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, but got it back in the 11th inning and edged out a 7-5 win.

Prior to Monday’s win against Texas, Boston had allowed only 16 runs in their last seven games, while scoring 49 runs.

Rick Porcello, who has struggled this season, after winning the Cy Young award last year, allowed three runs in six innings in the first game of the series, leading Boston to the win.

Boston has some great hitters this year. Heading into this series, Xander Bogaerts brings 95 hits, 49 runs and 39 RBI while Mookie Betts had 92 hits, 56 runs, 15 homers and 51 RBI. Betts posted a hit and two runs on Monday; but, Bogaerts is fighting off an injury.

For the season, Boston pitching staff has a 3.79 ERA, which is third in the league, and also have 469 quality starts, which is second best in the league.

Pitching Analysis

David Price will take the mound against the Rangers on Tuesday. In seven starts, Price has a 3-2 record with a 4.61 ERA.

Price has given up at least two runs in each of his last four starts but the team is 3-1 in that span.

The Red Sox will be looking for more consistency from him as he continues to work his way back to his All-Star form after missing most of the first half of the season due to injury.

Boston Trends

  • Boston is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Boston is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
  • Boston is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games on the road

Texas Team Analysis

Unlike the streaking Red Sox, the Rangers have lost six of their last eight contests and have gone from second place in the AL West to fourth.

The Rangers’ starting rotation hasn’t been of much help lately, allowing opponents to score 44 runs in the last eight games, including seven on Monday night.

Despite their recent slump, the Rangers still have a great chance of getting one of the Wild Card spots in the AL.

However, they can’t afford to lose games at home to the teams they are competing with for the spot.

Pitching Analysis

Yu Darvish will get the start for the Rangers. In 17 starts, Darvish is 6-6 with a 3.11 ERA.

Despite having only one win in his last seven starts, Darvish has pitched well for the Rangers, allowing three or less runs in all but one of those starts but he hasn’t been getting as much run support lately as he had earlier in the season.

Texas Trends

  • Texas is 16-8 ATS in its last 24 games
  • Texas is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Texas is 1-5 SU in its last 6 games

Pick and Prediction

The Red Sox seem unstoppable right now with their clutch pitching and hitting. However, Darvish, who is successful against the Red Sox, is the type of pitcher that can cause problems for their hot bats. Take Texas straight up or on the spread.
