How does the NFL Preseason work?

You can make individual players run drills all day long, but nothing prepares a team athlete better for the season than playing exhibition games. Especially in a game like football, where the playbook is so essential, it would be insane to try to begin the season without playing some low-stakes games.

The NFL preseason is the period that takes place each year before the start of the "regular" season. During this time, NFL teams compete in a three-week schedule of exhibition games that are not recorded in the official standings. 

Until last season the NFL held four weekends' worth of exhibition games but decided to cut one of its four preseason games so that it could add a 17th game to its schedule for the 2022/23 season.

As teams prepare for the regular season, the NFL preseason follows a weekly pattern for game plans, experienced playing time, and rookie exposure.

Let's examine how NFL teams approach the exhibition schedule from Week 1 through Week 3 as the assessment process continues until final roster cuts are announced.

Week 1: Practice Extension: NFL teams work on technique, core concepts, execution, and conditioning during the first week of preseason.

Week 2: Starters' Game Plans, Regular-Season Prep: NFL teams will break camp after the second preseason game to arrange a regular-season practice schedule while mimicking a "game week." Teams pass out game plans and examine opposing team footage, habits, and other traits in position meetings while scripting each practice (first-/second-down install, third down, red zone).

Week 3: In the final week, rookies are tested more into the mix handling the majority of the snaps while most veteran starters won't take a snap, critical backups will receive a few reps, and the games (packed with penalties) will be long and drawn out as players compete for the last roster places. The backups play every snap on offense, defense, and special teams.
