Why Bet on the Saints?

The Saints return from their bye, which might work against them given how well they were playing. In Week 5, they mauled the Redskins 43-19 in a game that saw quarterback Drew Brees pass for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Brees has now surpassed the legendary Peyton Manning all-time leading passer record with 72,103 career passing yards. Not only that, the Saints’ signal caller joined an elite handful of quarterbacks including Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, and Tom Brady with over 500 career touchdown passes.

Brees’ favorite target against the Redskins was Tre’Quan Smith, who caught all three scoring passes for 111 yards including a 62-yard touchdown that seemed to have shocked the Redskins’ defense. Meanwhile, Mark Ingram gained 53 yards and two touchdowns in 16 attempts in his first game returning from suspension.

New Orleans’ offense will be tested, however, by a rock-solid Ravens defense that has not allowed a second-half touchdown this season. The Saints’ offensive line will have to contend with a defense that just set a single-game franchise record for sacks with 11 to its credit against Marcus Mariota.

The Saints will also have to prove themselves on the road where they’re 3-7 SU and 5-5 ATS when playing on the road after the bye. Will the Saints offense be able to crack Baltimore’s defense? That’s what makes this game so interesting.

Why Bet on the Ravens?

It’s crazy to see how good this Ravens defense is; in last week’s 21-0 win at Tennessee, Baltimore’s D set a franchise record with 11 sacks on Marcus Mariota. It’s players such as linebacker Za’Darius Smith that make this defensive unit so harrowing. And they won’t be pulling any punches against the Saints.

The offense also did its part and outgained Tennessee 361-106. Joe Flacco completed 25-of-37 passes for 238 yards, one touchdown, and one pick. Flacco practically wasn’t needed as the Ravens took a 14-0 lead into the half that sealed the deal for them.

Joe Flacco’s 294 pass yards per game is inside the top 10 in the league, but his nine passing touchdowns are tied for fifth-fewest which means the Ravens offense is cooling down. Nevertheless, with such a good defense backing it, it’s hard to see these numbers drop.

Saints vs. Ravens Betting Trends

  • New Orleans is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games
  • New Orleans is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 6 of New Orleans' last 8 games
  • New Orleans is 15-5-1 ATS in its last 21 games on the road
  • Baltimore is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Baltimore is 9-4 SU in its last 13 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Baltimore's last 5 games
  • Baltimore is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games at home

Game Prediction: While everyone is focusing on the spread, I think this is a bet for the total. While Baltimore’s defense is exceptional, it’s still going to have a hard time of putting a lid on Brees. Conversely, I don’t see the Saints defense stopping Flacco from putting up points. In other words, I’m looking at the OVER.
