The franchise was established in 1988 as an expansion team by founder George Shinn. He moved the Hornets to New Orleans in 2002, where they played as the Hornets first, and then renamed to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013. In agreement with the NBA, Charlotte was granted a new franchise, the Charlotte Bobcats, in 2004. After the renaming of the Pelicans, the Bobcats announced that they would return to the Charlotte Hornets name again. They reclaimed the records of the former Hornets, which means that they are assumed to operate from 1988 to 2002 and then from 2014 going forward, even though they were treated as an expansion team.
In February 2010, it was announced that Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan had acquired a controlling interest in the franchise, becoming the first former player to own a franchise. It was his decision to return to their roots, taking back to the Hornets namesake and branding in 2014.
Even after having all the ingredients in place for a competitive franchise, the Hornets had an extended playoff drought. Throughout their history, the longest postseason run went up to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Since 2002, the team has yet to make it past the playoffs opening round.

The Hornets have a young core led by point guard LaMello Ball. He is poised to be the force that could take the Hornets to playoff contention levels. The biggest question is whether or not this young group of players can provide consistency through the season to earn a postseason berth. In the last five seasons, the Hornets have only had one overall winning season (above .500) and have not qualified for the playoffs in any of them. This could be the season to break that streak.
Placing your Charlotte Hornets bets on BetPhoenix thru the NBA basketball season can be a profitable and fun endeavor, especially if you put in some time and research.
Charlotte Hornets Spreads
Point Spreads are a margin-of-victory bet that indicates an estimated game result. This is an example of a Charlotte Hornets Point Spreads line:
Team Points Spread Odds
- Charlotte Hornets -2
- San Antonio Spurs +2
In this case, the line indicates that the Charlotte Hornets are the favorite to win by a margin of more than two points against the San Antonio Spurs. On the other side, the San Antonio Spurs are the underdog and can lose by less than a two points margin.
A small spread of 4 or fewer points means that the game is expected to be a close matchup, while a large spread of 5 or more points means that the favorite is expected to perform much better than the underdog.
People betting on the Hornets point spreads expect them to win by a margin over than -2 point spread, while people betting on the underdog are expecting the San Antonio Spurs to lose by less than 2 points to cover the spread.
· Hornets win by three or more points: Hornets bettors win
· Hornets win by precisely 2 points: The bet is a push, and all wagers are refunded
· Hornets win by 1 point or less: Spurs bettors win
· Spurs win the game: Spurs bettors win
Charlotte Hornets Moneylines
The Charlotte Hornets Moneylines bet is the most straightforward option in sports betting. You simply bet on the team that you believe will win the game. There's a negative number for the favorite, or the team considered more likely to win, and there is a positive number for the underdog, or the team considered more likely to lose.
This is an example of Charlotte Hornets Moneyline as it would be listed in BetPhoenix:
Team Moneyline
- Charlotte Hornets -120
- San Antonio Spurs +110
Using this example, the Charlotte Hornets Moneyline would result as follows:
· Hornets Moneyline: If you wagered to win $100 by betting on the Hornets -120, you would need to risk $120.
· Spurs Moneyline: For every $100 wagered on the Spurs +110, you would receive $110 if San Antonio wins the game.
Hornets Moneylines and Hornets point spreads use the same information to estimate the relative strength of each team for this particular matchup. The greater the Moneyline numbers indicate a greater favorite or more significant underdog.
Charlotte Hornets Over/Under Totals
The Hornets Totals bet, or over/under bet, is a wager on the estimated combined score of the game, in which you bet on the total of points scored being higher or lower than the set value. You can bet the over, meaning you predict the score to be above the number, or the under, indicating that you expect the final score to be less than the estimate. The bet can also be a push if the final score equals exactly the estimate, in which case all bets are refunded. This is an example of Charlotte Hornets Totals as it would be listed in BetPhoenix:
Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs
- Total: 216.5
- Over odds: -110
- Under odds: -110
For every $1.10 risked on either option, you'd win $1.
Charlotte Hornets Parlays
Charlotte Hornets Parlays is a type of wager where you combine different single bets into one. This is very advantageous as the odds are increased substantially since all bets included as part of the parlay must win for the whole parlay to pay out.
You can combine different types of bets, like point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, player props, and many other wagers. You can also choose between favorites and underdogs. Betphoenix will increase your Charlotte Hornets Parlays odds and payout as more individual bets are added. Hornets parlays allow up to 10 single bets, including cross-sport bets, allowing you, for instance, to pair an NBA game bet with an NFL bet and a Soccer bet.
For example, we can combine the Charlotte Hornets Point Spread of -2, and the Over of 216.5. We can add another couple of plays to the Hornets parlay, like the Cleveland Cavaliers -6.5 spread against the Detroit Pistons and the Under 222.5 on that game.
- Hornets Spread: -2 -110
- Hornets Totals: Over 216.5 -110
- Cavaliers Spread: -6.5 -110
- Cavaliers Totals: Under 222.5 -110
This 4-team Heart Parlay would compound payout odds of +1228, well above 10x times your bet if you wagered on each line separately. For example, risking $15 would earn you a payout of $184.25, with these possible outcomes:
· Hornets Point Spread covers Hornets over/under covers, Cavaliers Point Spread covers and the Cavaliers over/under covers. All bets cover: Win $184.25
· Hornets Point Spread pushes, Hornets over/under covers, Cavaliers Point Spread covers, and the Cavaliers over/under covers. The push is canceled, and it becomes a 3-team parlay: Win $92.12
· Hornets Point Spread covers, Hornets over/under doesn't cover, Cavaliers Point Spread covers, and the Cavaliers over/under covers. Loss: -$15
· Hornets Point Spread covers Hornets over/under covers, Cavaliers Point Spread doesn't cover, and the Cavaliers over/under covers. Loss: -$15
· Hornets Point Spread covers Hornets over/under covers, Cavaliers Point Spread covers and the Cavaliers over/under doesn't cover. Loss: -$15
Any lost pick within the parlay selection constitutes a loss.

Charlotte Hornets Teasers
A teaser is a grouping of multiple bets combined into one single bet. The difference between teasers and parlays is that with teasers, the lines are moved in your favor by the number of points given by the teaser.
Charlotte Hornets Teasers often start at 4 points and can go up to 5 points. Available Teasers on BetPhoenix include:
- 4 points Teasers for 2 to 8 Teams
- 4.5 points Teasers for 2 to 8 Teams
- 5 points Teasers for 2 to 8 Teams
- 7 points Teaser for 3 Teams
- 9 points Teaser for 4 Teams
One of the most popular Teasers is the 2-team 4-point that has the same payout as a regular -110 wager.
Hornets Teasers are attractive for giving you a significant advantage with a much more favorable line, but this comes at a cost in terms of the payout opportunities.
Based on the previous example, we can tease the Hornets spread -2 and Hornets total Over 216.5, plus the Cavaliers spread -6.5, and the Cavaliers Under 222.5 on a Sweetheart Hornets teaser of 9-point 4-team would be as follows:
Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs
· Original Hornets spread -2 with a 216.5 Hornets Over/Under
· New adjusted teased Hornets spread +7 with a new over 207.5 for the Hornets Over/Under
Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons
· Original Cavaliers spread -6.5 with a 222.5 Cavaliers Over/Under
· New adjusted teased Cavaliers +2.5 with a new under 213.5 for the Cavaliers Over/Under
In the hypothetical case of the Hornets winning the game 105-104 (-1/209), the Hornets odds and Over failed to cover the original point spreads but would win on the 4-team 9-point Teaser, as they would cover the new +7 point spread, and the over 207.5 points.
Note that on teasers, a push is considered a loss.

Charlotte Hornets Odds To Win the Southeast Division
Charlotte Hornets odds to win the Southeast Division: +1000
The Charlotte Hornets have yet to show what was expected with the drafting of LaMelo Ball. While Ball has developed into a superb player, the Hornets front office still needs to build a competitive lineup around him. Without significant reinforcements, the Hornets don't look like challengers in one of the most improved divisions in the league.
Charlotte Hornets Odds To Win the Eastern Conference Championship
Charlotte Hornets odds to win the Eastern Conference: +7500
The Charlotte Hornets are a longshot contender if many factors continue to develop well for them. They are coming off a record of 33-39 last season, which earned them the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference, and with no significant changes in the roster, things could look better. But there is still a lot of excitement around this organization. They have some of the most promising young talents in the NBA and have been called the most entertaining team in the league.
Charlotte Hornets Odds To NBA Championship
Charlotte Hornets odds to win NBA Championship: +10000
The Charlotte Hornets are more than a longshot to winning the Championship. In a competitive conference that includes playoff regulars like Miami and Atlanta, the Hornets are more likely to miss the playoffs entirely than to make them, and much less make a run all the way to the title. But one day, these young promises, like LaMelo Ball, will explode.
Charlotte Hornets 2021-2022 Season Recap
The 2021–22 was the Hornets' 32nd season in the NBA. The Hornets were looking to improve after their previous season's 33-39 record and hoped to make it to the playoffs.
After failing to take the Hornets to the playoffs in his four years as head coach, James Borrego was fired and replaced by Steve Clifford at the end of the season. He posted a negative record of 138–163 (.458) during his time with the team.
With the Memphis Grizzlies winning their division title for the first time in franchise history, Charlotte is now the only NBA team to have never won a division title.
Despite clinching a spot for the Play-In Tournament, they lost to the Atlanta Hawks. The last time they played in the playoffs was in 2016.
