Costa Rica - World Cup 2018

You are here

They may have been the darlings of the 2014 World Cup, but in 2018 things are different for the Ticos.

Costa Rica qualified with two games to spare, ending up in the No. 2 spot behind Mexico, however, they won’t be underestimated this time around, as teams are aware this to be a serious soccer nation.

New coach Oscar Ramirez has taken the helm for Costa Rica’s squad with hopes of making another run at the quarterfinals.

Costa Rica World Cup History

Costa Rica is the most successful country in the history of Central American Football. Their program originated in 1927 and has qualified for four World Cups.

Their best showing was in 2014 when they beat Greece in the round of sixteen and fell to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals game decided by penalty kicks.

Prior to that, Costa Rica had earned World Cup berths in 1990, 2002, and 2006. The 1990 team advanced out of the group stage by beating Scotland and Sweden but lost in the round of 16 to former Czechoslovakia.

What Was Costa Rica’s Road To The World Cup?

Coming into the qualifiers for Russia 2018, Costa Rica received a bye to the fourth round along with five other teams who were ranked 1-6.

Costa Rica won the initial qualifiers over Panama, Haiti, and Jamaica, going undefeated 5-1-0.

From there, Costa Rica qualified for the 5th and final round of 6 teams gaining a winning record of 4-4-2, that included a 4-0 win over the United States and a 1-1 draw with Mexico. That record was good enough to earn them the #2 spot in the standings and a trip to Russia 2018.

How Does The Costa Rica 2018 World Cup Squad Stack Up?

Costa Rica is a team inspired by Real Madrid’s goaltender Keylor Navas, who guards the goal with uncanny catlike reflexes.

Joining him in Costa Rica’s 5-4-1 formation is 30-year old Bologna player Giancarlo Gonzalez along with Brian Ruiz and Celso Borges further up the field. On the attack are Marco Ureña and Cristian Bolaños, who tied for the team lead in scoring during the qualifying rounds.

Costa Rica Odds To Win World Cup 2018

Again, Costa Rica does not have it easy this time around. They have the worst odds to make it out of their group at 4/1, and even if they make it out in 2nd place, they will likely face Germany in the round of 16.

However, while underdogs in all their group matches, the games against Serbia and Switzerland are winnable as they’ve proved before.
