Denmark - World Cup 2018

You are here

Among the dark horse squads coming into Russia 2018 are the Danes.

Having finished second in their qualifying group behind Poland and breezing through the second round of qualifying with a 4-2-2 record, Denmark has elite talent in every position from the goaltender to the attackers.

If this team gets out of the group stage and draws the right matches in the knockout round, look for them to turn some heads this summer.

A Nation Of World Cup Producing Talent

With its origins in the early 1900's, the DBU (Danish Football Association) has long been one of the great talent-producers of the sport.

They participated in some of the early Olympic soccer competitions, winning a gold medal in 1908 and a silver in 1912, and was ranked as one of the top teams in the world in the pre-FIFA era.

Following the first World Cup in 1930, Denmark did not qualify for the tournament until 1986, when they advanced to the round of 16 in Mexico. They again made appearances in 1998 (where they made the quarterfinals), 2002 (advanced to the round of 16), and 2010 (eliminated in the group stage).

What Was Denmark’s Road To The 2018 World Cup?

The DBU earned its spot in Russia 2018 by coming in second in group E of the UEFA qualifiers. Despite suffering losses to Poland and Montenegro in the early goings, the Danes rebounded and vaulted themselves to the second round where they crushed the Republic of Ireland 5-1 to qualify for the World Cup.

Since qualification, Denmark has played two friendlies, a 1-0 win against Panama and a 0-0 tie with Chile. Two more games await them prior to Russia with Sweden and Mexico in early June before facing Peru in their World Cup opener.

How Does The Denmark World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

Denmark will rely on a very talented group of players to get them through the first round. The Danes are a balanced team with at least one standout in each part of the field.

At goal, they have Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel who has backstopped his club to both EPL and EFL championships.

Captain Simon Kjaer is a stalwart on defense playing for Sevilla, and earlier this season helped them upset Manchester United in the Champions League.

Upfront there is the trio of Nicolai Jorgensen, Andreas Cornelius and Nicklas Bendtner, all three of whom possess the ability to be effective at scoring.

Finally, in the midfield, Tottenham star Christian Eriksen will be counted on to score goals. Eriksen led the team in scoring through qualifying, netting 11 goals to his name.

Denmark Odds To Win World Cup 2018

While Denmark does not have the firepower that France possesses, their odds of beating everyone else in the group are pretty good.

Depending on what happens in their first game against Peru, look for the DBU to come in second in the group and possibly make a run at the quarterfinals. They will likely face Croatia or Argentina in the round of sixteen, and their odds against both of those teams are not that bad.
