Egypt - World Cup 2018

You are here

Making their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, Egypt got to Russia behind a stifling defensive 4-2-3-1 game.

The team is made up of a mix of youth and experience, featuring the oldest player in the entire tournament in goaltender Essam El-Hadary as well as the 25-year-old Liverpool standout Mohamed Salah who will be competing in this year's UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid.

An African Giant Though Absent From The World Cup

Despite their many years' absence from the Cup, Egypt is still regarded as the most successful African Nation in soccer, having won the African Cup of Nations tournament a record seven times.

They have also been ranked as high as 9th in the FIFA rankings, making them the only African team to ever reach the top 10.

This will be the first time that the Pharaohs have made it to the World Cup since 1990 however and only the third time since 1934. In both of those tournaments, Egypt failed to win a single game. This year seems to be their best chance to break that trend.

Egypt’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

In the qualifying tournament, Egypt stormed through its group with a 4-1-1 record. That run included wins over Ghana, Congo, and Uganda. The only loss was a 0-1 tilt against Uganda, who was runner-up in their group.

Salah lead the entire qualifying tournament in goals, scoring five. Since qualifying, the Pharaohs have played two friendly matches against Portugal and Greece that resulted in losses.

Team manager Hector Cuper has held the reins of the Egyptian squad since 2015 and has coached his team to a 65% win rate in that time.

How Does The Egypt World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

Players for Egypt's run at the World Cup in 2018 will include El-Hadary and Salah along with defensive stalwarts Rami Rabia and Ahmed Hegazi.

Salah is the indisputable star of the club, having gained a very high profile from his time playing in Europe. He is currently the top scorer in the Premier League at the time of this writing with 29 goals for Liverpool.

Egypt Odds To Win The World Cup 2018

Egypt is the second-highest ranked nation in their group behind Uruguay, but the odds of them making it into the knockout round are 5/4. While their particular style of play does technically allow them to win against any given opponent, they nonetheless will need to score goals in order to advance.

If Salah can continue the same success he has had in club play over to the international stage, the Pharaohs should be in good shape.

Nobody in the group should give them trouble besides Uruguay, against whom they are a 4/1 underdog. They are also 7/2 underdogs in their match against Russia, but with their stifling style of play, it is easy to imagine them keeping the hosts off the scoreboard and at best forcing a draw.
