What Type of Horse Racing Bets Can You Make?

There are generally two categories of bets to choose from when you bet on horses: straight bets and exotics.

If it’s your first time betting on the ponies, stick to straights. They’re simple and cheap. Pick one horse to come in first, second, or third and that’s about it.

You can bet multiple bets on multiple horses in a single bet with exotics. Though you might have to have some luck or major skill to win when you bet exotics, they’re the way to go when you get a knack for picking horses because they can pay off big time.

Straight Bets

You’re betting on one horse. That’s it. These are the types of bets you’ll find:

WIN– Bet on the horse that will come in first place. If your horse finishes first, you win.

PLACE– Bet on your horse to “place” and you’re betting that he will come in first OR second. If your horse finishes in first or second, you win. Though the payout for a place bet is less than a WIN, you cash in if your horse finishes in the top two spots.

SHOW– Bet that your horse will come in first, second, OR third. You’re hedging your bets and have a higher chance of winning, but the payout is much less than a win or place wager.

ACROSS THE BOARD– Bet across the board and you’re betting your horse to win, place, AND show. Across-the-board bets are known as “combo straight bets” because it’s three different bets (win, place, AND show) in one.

WIN/PLACE, PLACE/SHOW– In a win/place bet, you’re betting your horse to win AND place. If he wins, you collect both the win and place money. If he finishes second, you collect just the place money. In a place/show bet, you’re betting that your horse will place and show. If your horse finishes second, you collect the place and show money; if he finishes third, you just get the show money.

Exotic Bets

In exotic bets, you’re betting on multiple horses in a single bet, which increases your profit potential. But, they can be much harder to win than straight bets and can get expensive if you’re not careful and don’t have much skill in handicapping horses. But don’t be afraid to lay some money on a few exotic bets once you’ve dipped your feet into horse betting.

EXACTA– You’re betting on two horses to come in first and second in exact order. Let’s say you’ve placed a $2 exacta on horses 7 and 5, you can only collect if horse #7 comes in first and horse #5 comes in second. Skilled horse bettors love exacta bets because the payoff can be very lucrative. You can also “box” your exacta bet which means your two horses can come in any order in the top two spots and you still win.

QUINELLA– You’re betting on two horses to come in first and second in any order with a quinella. As long as your two horses finish in the top two spots, you win. So if you placed a quinella bet on horses 7 and 3, you win if horse #7 and horse #3 come in first and second in any order. If this looks like a box exacta, it’s because it is, only the odds are different for each bet so you can make more money on a box exacta than on a quinella.

TRIFECTA– You bet that three horses will finish in first, second, and third in exact order. If you place a trifecta bet on 2-3-5, you only win if horse #2 comes in first, horse #3 comes in second, and horse #5 comes in third. You can also box your trifecta bet so you can win if your three horses come in first, second, and third in any order.

SUPERFECTA– You bet that four horses will finish, first, second, third, and fourth in exact order. As with exactas and trifectas, you can box a superfecta at an additional cost.
